Greenland is the largest island on earth. Contrary to its name, most of Greenland is covered in ice with most people living along the coast.

Greenland is known by the Inuit as "Kalaallit Nunaat". When translated, this means "country of the Greenlanders". Before this the country was known to the Inuit as "Inuit Nunaat" which when translated means "country of the Inuit".

With the help of Visit Denmark , the official tourism web site for Denmark, timegenie.com has been able to determine that most parts of Greenland observe daylight saving time (summer time). This information was also confirmed by the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington, DC.

Additionally, Greenland Home Rule also confirmed that Greenland does observe daylight saving time and follows the EU (European Union) decision as to when daylight saving time begins and ends. As a result, Greenland begins observing daylight saving time on the last Sunday of March and switches back to standard time on the last Sunday of October each year.

timegenie.com also contacted Thule Air Force Base in Greenland. The public relations officer at Thule Air Force Base told timegenie.com that Thule observes daylight saving time and is in the Atlantic Time zone. Thule is located in the Atlantic Time zone so the air force base can use the same time as other air force bases and command centers located on the east coast of the USA. Unlike other parts of Greenland, Thule Air Force Base begins observing daylight saving time based upon North American rules. As a result, daylight saving time begins on the first Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October each year.

Unfortunately, although timegenie.com contacted The National Tourist Board of Greenland many times, no replies have ever been received.

Greenland is divided into four time zones which are, from west to east (left to right)

Atlantic Time
Central Greenland Time
Eastern Greenland Time
Greenwich Meantime

Qaanaaq (Thule) along Pituffik and other communities in this area are located in the western most region of Greenland. This part of Greenland is located in the Atlantic Time zone and are UTC/GMT -4 hours during standard time (winter time) and UTC/GMT -3 hours during daylight saving time (summer time). Qaanaaq (Thule) follows the same rules as North America for when daylight saving time begins and ends.

Most parts of Greenland, including Nuuk the capital of Greenland, are UTC/GMT -3 hours during standard time (winter time) and UTC/GMT -2 hours during daylight saving time (summer time). The towns and villages using this time are located in the Central Greenland Time zone. Follows the same rules as the EU for when daylight saving time begins and ends.

A small area on the eastern coast of Greenland, located approximately between 70º north and 75º north, which includes Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund) is UTC/GMT -1 hour during standard time (winter time) and UTC/GMT 0 hours during daylight saving time (summer time). These towns and villages are located in the Eastern Greenland Time zone. Follows the same rules as the EU for when daylight saving time begins and ends.

Danmarkshavn and Port Arthur use the same time as Greenwich Meantime and do not observe daylight saving time (summer time). As a result, both Danmarkshavn and Port Arthur are UTC/GMT 0 hours all year.

Although there are 4 time zones, for all intents and purposes, only three time zones are used. The time zone which is located in Greenwich Meantime (Danmarkshavn and Port Arthur) is a small and isolated area above 75º north and lower than 78º north on the eastern coast of Greenland. In this time zone you will find the National Park I Nørdgrønland Øg Østgrønlar and seismology stations operated by Denmark. Due to its remote and virtually uninhabited location, this time zone is seldom used.

Greenland is the world’s largest island. Greenland is about 81% ice–capped. Vikings reached the island in the 10th century from Iceland. Danish colonization began in the 18th century and Greenland was made an integral part of Denmark in 1953. It joined the European Community (now the European Union) with Denmark in 1973 but withdrew in 1985 over a dispute over stringent fishing quotas. Greenland was granted self–government in 1979 by the Danish parliament. The law went into effect the following year. Denmark continues to exercise control of Greenland’s foreign affairs.
